One neat idea on the new ticket machines can be seen on this ticket which is for two concessionary pass holders. But it's only one ticket I hear you all say. Yes, but below the word concession is x02 which means every time two or more people get on the bus and ask for single tickets I can save paper, and therefor the planet, by issuing a multi ticket. So instead of getting a ticket miles long when ten people get on and ask for ten single tickets they only use a small amount of paper and reduce their carbon footprint. But they have to ask when they get on, not after I have issued the tenth ticket.

every little helps help the planet.
has the fuel economy improved much during the time on the fleet?
We have much newer buses now than when I started here 10 years ago and they are more ecomomical than the older buses. We could do more to improve but the big problem is getting some drivers to switch their engines of at Timing points and temini.
Sorry, but in my experience, because the new buses are packed with modern features (like air-con, better seating, more uprights, electronic blinds, wheelchair ramps etc) and because they have emission filters/converters etc, they are both heavier and less fuel efficient...they're better buses by far, but....
When I signed up, over thirty years ago, you got about 10 or 12 mpg out of a standard single deck, 8 to 9 mpg out of a Double Deck or Leyland National...more recently we got 17mpg out of Mercedes 709 minibuses.
Nowdays you're lucky to get 8mpg out of any conventional bus (5 for a decker or 6 for a saloon is more typical) and the Optare Solos replacing the Mercs only do about 9 - 10 mpg...
At some point, something will HAVE to be done...
